Mamas. I don’t know about you but I am tired! Lately there has been a lot of crying, screaming, and overall fussiness/whining. We’ve been experiencing some huge changes in our house which I’m sure is causing all the problems but seriously, it’s getting bad. I’m to the point where by 12 noon, I’m exhausted and done with the day which is way too early in the day to give up.
As I’ve been trying to figure out how to get back to normal, I’ve realized that there are 5 essential things I need to do everyday to feel like a real person again. Not that being a mom isn’t being a real person but I’ve been so bogged down mentally and emotionally that I feel like I’m watching my life happen to me and I want my life back!
So here’s what I suggest every mom do:
1. Wear something you want to.
I don’t like jeans. I don’t remember the last time I liked wearing jeans. Skirts? Sure. Dresses? Even better. Leggings? If I’m wearing jeans at all and am at home, I change into leggings. There is just not much I love about jeans. They’re not too comfortable, they’re not warm enough when it’s freezing outside and they’re not cool enough when it’s too hot outside. Personally, I’m a fan of skirts and dresses most of the year. It’s a slight learning curve to pick up kids and pick up things off of the floor when the skirts/dresses are knee length or higher but it’s worth it. So comfy!
The skirt I’m wearing below was found at Cents of Style. I dressed it down with a graphic tee and a white jean jacket to fit into my everyday routine: carpool, grocery store, and lessons/practices for the kids.
2. Eat something you want to.
My kids have grown up knowing that if I’m eating something, they can ask for a bite but my answer is probably “no” and there’s no fighting it. Having grown up that way, they are pretty good about leaving me alone when I’m eating in the kitchen or the dining room and they aren’t invited. However, I know that you all don’t necessarily have the same luxuries so my suggestion is to find something you love and eat it wherever you can. I know that food shouldn’t be a stress-reliever but let’s be honest, it is. And I love food.
3. Do something you want to.
I’m a stay-at-home mom. I work from home occasionally but mostly I’m just at home which means I can get burned out real fast of the routines, the questions, the crying, and the entertaining. Each day it’s important for me to do something that I want to do without anyone asking or expecting me to do it. Usually I choose cleaning but that’s just because it makes me feel better. Sometimes I choose music. Most of the time I choose scrolling through photos on Instagram or reading about people’s problems on Facebook.
4. Read something you want to.
I’m not much into reading but I really wish I enjoyed reading more. Taking a break from real life and getting lost in a different story always helps me relax. Although, I admit, some days I really do just read social media or the gossip sites about whatever reality television show I’m currently watching. I love the gossip sites because it reminds me that whatever problems I feel like are going on in my life, these reality people are actually going through a lot more so I can feel bad for them and move on. I also love catching up on friends’ blogs and reading about their lives.
5. Listen to something you want to.
I cannot tell you how many times we have to listen to the latest Disney movie soundtrack before the kids finally get tired of hearing the songs. Right now we’re on “Moana” and I’m quite sure I have memorized almost all the words to almost all of the songs, even the ones that aren’t in English. We listen to it on the way to school, on the way home from school, on the way to lessons, on the way to stores, and even at home. At some point in the day, I let the kids know that I am no longer willing to listen to their music because it’s my turn. Then I turn on whatever music I’ve been wanting to listen to until I feel complete. Then we can go back to the kids’ music.
