We had the opportunity to visit Maui, an island we’ve never experienced before. One thing we loved when we visited Hawaii the first time was the Shave Ice. Normally I would head to the local bakery or ice cream shop for a treat but not in Hawaii. In Hawaii, Shave Ice is the thing. We have tried many Shave Ice Shops in Hawaii and on the Mainland but Ululani’s Gourmet Hawaiian Shave Ice is the best we’ve tried.
Ululani’s Shave Ice is hand crafted, syrups are made with pure cane sugar, and they use premium purees, fruit juices, and premium concentrates for all of their syrups. Ululani’s ice is also incredible soft and fine. I had never experienced such soft ice before. In fact, I didn’t even know you could have soft ice.
One of the best surprises of their Shave Ice was the syrups. Not only are they made with the best ingredients, they use local fruits when possible.
I have never been a true fan of coconut until Ululani’s. Ululani’s uses real local coconut which meant that their coconut syrup was out of this world. I also felt that way about their passionfruit, mango, pineapple, and strawberry. The taste is amazing and mixed with the perfect soft ice, it all tastes like heaven.
Unfortunately because we were on a “budget” (quotes because let’s be honest, there was no real budget other than try not to blow thousands of dollars on food), I opted for no ice cream or mochi which I now regret that I’m back on the mainland because if all of their flavors and ice were that good, I’m positive the ice cream and mochi must be just as good, if not better. They also are gourmet.
Another great thing about Ululani’s was the fact that they took a chopstick and poked holes into the ice before applying the syrup creating a great flow of flavor all the way to the bottom. Plus they offer a guarantee: if you hit any white patches of ice and want/need more syrup, you can go to the front of the line and they will add more.
I had looked up reviews on TripAdvisor before we went and people had mentioned incredibly long lines. We never encountered long lines, only one or two groups in front of us and we went around noon, 4 pm, and right before they closed. Maybe we just happened to hit the right days at the right times but we never had any issue with wait times. People have said, however, that wait times can be 15-30 minutes long, we just never experienced it.
Ululani’s has 6 locations in Maui: Lahaina Front Street (2 locations), Kihei (the only one we visited), Kahului, Wailuku, and at the Hyatt Regency in Lahaina.
We can only speak for the Kihei location but we enjoyed that it was right across the street from the beach/park and that they had plenty of tables with a covering overhead that had holes to hold the Shave Ice cups.
