Warning: I tend to spill all of my secrets to people who probably don’t care and it’s about to happen to you right now.
We have young kids but that doesn’t stop me from letting them watch shows they probably shouldn’t watch. It was how I was raised and I’m mostly normal and only get scared that a murderer is standing behind my bedroom door every now and then and totally realized at a young age that people make out when they like each other and can count the number of guys I’ve kissed in my life on one hand so I feel pretty confident I’m not ruining my kids. The other day though, when my little one took God’s name in vain (just repeated it from the show), it really made me step back and think. I mean, we were watching a pretty harmless show, “Master Chefs Junior,” because for some reason he loves that show. But I thought, if I can protect my kids from some of these things that I don’t want them to always hear or see in movies I really want to watch, I should.
What is VidAngel, you ask? VidAngel is an online movie/television show store. Basically, you buy a movie or television show series (there’s not many TV shows yet, but more will be coming, I’m sure) for $20, choose which parts to you want to take out, and then when you’re done, you sell back the movie to VidAngel less $1 or $2 depending on which quality you chose. This way makes it legal and a great option because many movies are only $1 per night which is a great deal. Plus it beats out rental places prices and it’s online so it’s wherever you have a device and internet. Because we are actually buying the movies, VidAngel is able to sell a lot more movie options for you to stream online.
Here’s what a movie might look like. As you can see, under the title is the rating and how many filters there are.
Below is a screen of what some of the filters look like. You can click them in order to take out those parts. After you’ve applied all of the filters you want, it even tells you how long the movie will be with all of the cut out sections.
We most recently watched “The King’s Speech.” It’s rated R but because we took out the 3 F words and a few of other things, it suddenly became a very long PG rated movie.
We use VidAngel almost every week to watch a lot of movies we otherwise wouldn’t be able to find on Netflix or at Redbox. We’ve watched lots of Christmas movies, romantic comedies, and a lot of PG-13 and R movies. We have really enjoyed being able to stream these movies anywhere we are, even while on vacation.
The nice thing about the way they are edited is that it’s quite well done. I remember back in the day with a different illegal company, I’d watch the movies and they’d mostly miss the word I wanted edited or they had just done a poor job of editing. I have yet to see a movie through VidAngel that I thought was poorly done.
If you are looking for a great way to watch movies, even unedited but just want to watch it once, I’d highly recommend VidAngel. They have a lot of great options and many movies that aren’t even at your local RedBox.
What is VidAngel? VidAngel is a streaming service that allows customers to filter potentially objectionable content out of their movies and TV shows. Each movie and show costs only $1 after sellback. The customer buys the movie for $20 (because ownership of the movie is necessary in order to legally filter the content) and then within 24 hours, VidAngel buys it back for $19.
