As I thought about creating a BOO kit, I really wanted to BOO some of the crossing guards in my neighborhood. I watch them everyday, greeting the children with smiles, helping keep the children safe, and standing out there whether it’s incredibly hot or freezing cold in the snow. They learn the children’s names and they learn about the kids and what they like as they walk through the crosswalk each day. I have been so impressed by them so I really wanted to show them how much I appreciate them but in secret.
I stopped by my local Walmart and grabbed variety bags of M&M’S®, SNICKERS®, TWIX®, Skittles®, Starburst®, and Life Savers®. I also stopped by the card aisle and found some great gift wrapping products from American Greetings®. To pull together my gift, I wanted to make it a movie night with Ghostbusters® in mind. While at Walmart, I bought a few other things to make it a movie night, at least things that make it a movie night like what I enjoy.
I took them home and used almost all of my products putting candy and other movie night things into gift bags. I’ve made multiple gifts. Because I am excited about Ghostbusters® coming out on DVD/Blu-ray (in Walmart stores October 11), I found some adorable ceramic ghosts. I loved putting the candy and other movie night things, including a gift card to rent a movie, into the ghost and tucking them into the BOO’d card. I also created little treat bags for the staff at the local school and little treat bags (not shown but look similar) for friends and neighbors so that they can get BOO’d as well. I also printed off the You’ve Been BOO’d cards so once they receive the BOO kit with the card, they will be able to go to the website, print off their own card, and continue the gift-giving to someone else.
Secretly delivering the BOO kits to the crossing guards was harder than I thought it was going to be. I felt a little awkward stalking them as I did. I tried to figure out when they were by their cars and when they weren’t because my idea was to sneak the BOO kits next to or hopefully into their cars (I know, dangerous) if possible.
Two of the crossing guards I had in mind I have watched for years as I drive past their crosswalks almost daily. The lady crossing guard stands by her car everyday and if she’s not by it, she’s in it. Her school has two start times and two end times so she sits in her car for about an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. However, one morning, I drove by and she was nowhere near her car! So I quickly drove home, grabbed my BOO gift, and left it right next to her car under her stop sign. I couldn’t believe that I had pulled it off.
The man crossing guard I have watched for at least five years. He’s older, maybe in his 70s, and is a little slow to cross the street. However, each day, he greets the children with a smile and wishes them a good day at school or a good evening at home. For the children heading home, he’ll often have a big bag of treats sitting in his car that is parked at one end of the crosswalk. He’ll leave the back door open and after the kids cross the street, he’ll point to his car if he has a treat and the kids are free to get one while he’s helping other children cross. This one made me more nervous. He spends so much time in his car waiting for the children, I didn’t know how I’d get it into his car. However, after school one day, he happened to be on the other side of the crosswalk from his car so in a crowd of kids and other moms, I left the BOO kit in his car as we passed. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get a picture of it but I was so glad I pulled that one off, too.
BOOing our crossing guards, neighbors, and friends has been a great way to start this Fall season. To create your BOO kit, print off a BOO card here. Ghostbusters® will be available on Blu-ray and DVD in stores at Walmart on October 11, 2016 and can be preordered on Blu-ray or DVD today. How fun! I love the concept of BOO-ing.
I love this! While my kid’s don’t and I never did as a kid; the crossing guards have always held a kind place in my heart. They’re always waving and happy to stop and converse. #client
