This year we are doing our best to stretch our tax refund by finding things that will help our family.
As our children get older and spend more time away from our house and us, we have found that we feel more comfortable allowing them to take a phone with them, whether it be when they head to a friend’s house or while they’re at practice.

We have been looking at phone options and I recently bought our service plan at Walmart through Walmart Family Mobile. We chose the Walmart Family Mobile PLUS Plan which is Unlimited* Talk, Text, & Data plus a free VUDU movie credit every month ($7 value) per line for $49.88. (*Includes up to 10GB of 4G LTE† data then 2G.) The value is great for what we need. It allows us plenty of high-speed data for what we need from our phone each month. Plus because of this plan, when the kids are not using it, I can use it during their practices to keep up with my friends and clients on social media. We also love using it for video chats. I love the free VUDU movie credit as well so we can cast a movie through our Chromecast and enjoy a family movie night! The VUDU monthly credit is $7 which is the same as a new release rental. VUDU can be cast onto your Smart TV, ROKU, Chromecast, VUDU Spark, or other compatible devices.
As for the phone, I went with the Samsung Galaxy ON5 (regularly $119) and bought the SIM kit ($19.88) to go along with it. Since Family Mobile bills you later, you only have to pay $19.88 when you sign up. I love the Samsung brand and this phone allows for video chat instead of a regular phone call which was something that was required for a phone for my children. The only downfall is that it does use data but luckily we have 10GB of 4G LTE with the Walmart Family Mobile PLUS Plan each month.
We also immediately put a child lock onto the phone where we can decide what apps they can have access to. Without the password, they are unable to get out to use other apps or download apps. However, they are still able to call or text us and take photos. The fun thing about this app as well, is that they can take photos but can’t go through the photos without the unlock password so we can see what they took pictures of while they were away.
With this Walmart Family Mobile PLUS Plan, as I mentioned, we received a $7 credit for VUDU so we planned a family movie night. With our busy schedules, we don’t often get to actually sit down as a family and enjoy a movie together.
At first, we were going to keep it simple but then my kids wanted to have a few friends over. Well, we can’t just invite a couple of friends over so we ended up inviting 17 kids to enjoy a movie night with us. It was the best kind of “family” movie night possible.
With so many kids from ages 1-8 years old both boy and girl, I needed to have a general theme. We went with a “Color Me Fun” theme that would be held outdoors. We wanted all sorts of colors with all sorts of fun things to enjoy. As for food, my kids got to choose some of their favorite foods to share with their friends. We also grabbed some toys and had planned for some games with the kids but there were so many with creative minds that they kept themselves busy all night.
My favorite part of the party was my “gold at the end of the rainbow” plate. We love fruit at our house and so we combined all of our favorite fruits onto a metal pizza pan. Despite the fact that I had to look up what a rainbow looked like, because for some reason I didn’t memorize the order of the colors like everyone else did when they were 6 years old, it turned out perfect. Some of the moms thought it was clever and the kids loved it … because there was gold on the plate with all of the other sugary fruits.
The thing that shocked me the most about this party was that the fingernail polish did not get used as I thought it would. I thought all the girls would love painting their nails and helping each other, which they did, but the boys were getting bored of the fact that the girls just wanted to paint their nails so the boys joined them at the table with sticks, grass, and anything else they could find lying around the yard and ended up painting them with the polish. I thought it was so fun and creative and didn’t mind at all that our entire backyard smelled of nail polish. It was great to see them using their imaginations to the fullest!
All in all, it turned out really cute and colorful. Our “family” loved the movie, loved the food, and loved being together.
We can’t wait to have another movie night next month with our VUDU credit. Have you tried Walmart Family Mobile?
