Most days, my family is constantly on the go. It is exhausting.
I have children who attend schools 30 minutes apart (I know, I’m crazy) which means school drop off and school pick ups take a long time. I volunteer for multiple things which means that I have a meeting or two every week. My daughter does gymnastics and dance so we are at those a few hours every week. My son does soccer and other sports classes throughout the year so we are at a lot of parks and recreation centers. Our family loves to spend time together and be out in the community so we often are at events. We also have best friends close by so when we aren’t busy, we are usually spending time with them, or at least our children are spending time with them either at our house or theirs.
By the time it’s dinner time, I am exhausted. I remember the days when my children were younger and I would put out a few toys and books and they would play for an hour while I made dinner. Gone are those days when I could keep them entertained so easily and when we had that much time before dinner to spend actually making dinner.
Often times we will head outside for dinner. We love doing picnics at the park, even when it is way too cold to be sitting outside. Dinner time is important to our family so even though we may not be sitting at the dining room table eating dinner together, we still make sure dinner is a special time. Which is why I enjoy Sam’s Club Family Pizza Combo deal. It includes a 16″ pizza, cheesy breadsticks, 6 cookies, and a 2-liter bottle of Coca-Cola. Just visit your local Sam’s Club, head to the Club Cafe, and order the Family Pizza Combo Deal. They will make it and package it up for you to take wherever you are headed! All you have to do is enjoy the food!
Along with the food, we love to pack things to do while at the park. Our children still like to play on the playground but as my husband and I don’t have the imagination and sometimes the ability to climb and slide, climb and slide for hours on end like our children, we like to bring something the whole family can enjoy. Items we usually pack include a picnic blanket, a card game, and some sort of ball.
Most recently we were at the park for my son’s soccer game. We had our picnic blanket, our latest addiction card game, a soccer ball, and our baseball mitts and ball. After the soccer game, we were able to walk over to the playground area, eat our Family Pizza Combo deal, and enjoy some time together.
Packing for a Picnic
The following are a list of simple things but essentials for your picnic:
Make sure to get your food. We like to take our picnic basket as well that includes plates, silverware, and cups. It’s a little fancy for family outings but I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Include a game. We take card games since we have tried board games and they get messy so fast but some sort of game is essential to bonding as a family.
Find some sports supplies to include in your bag to the park. My husband isn’t athletic at all but he enjoys kicking around the soccer ball or throwing the baseball with the kids.
Don’t forget diaper wipes. We don’t have kids in diapers anymore but we still always carry the diaper wipes. Meals can get messy and sticky, kids can get muddy and dirty, and other random things can happen that you don’t think will happen yet they do. Having a wet wipe of some sort is always helpful.
Take a blanket. Sometimes we use the blanket as a tablecloth on some of those really gross park picnic tables and sometimes we use it on the ground so we can sit. Whatever you’re using it for, it is a must-have for any picnic.
