Hale Centre Theatre in West Valley City, Utah, is a round theater where the audience has the ability to see the entire stage. There is a circle stage in the middle with chairs around the stage with 9 rows going up.
They have already begun building a new theater in Sandy right next to I-15 and it’s huge! It will be done at the end of 2017 and I cannot wait to attend that theater.
“Sister Act” apparently was a movie back in the ’90s but somehow I totally missed it. Everyone I’ve talked to so far about it has said how much they loved the movie so I was expecting good things from the musical at Hale Centre Theatre.
The story line basically goes that a wannabe diva accidentally witnesses a crime so she has be hidden until trial. The cops decide to hide her in an unsuspecting place which turns out to be a convent. She ends up leading the choir and changing a lot of things around the convent.
The scene was decorated well and as always, they did a wonderful job changing scenes quickly and efficiently during the show. Pillars came down from the ceiling, they used the moving circle piece in the middle of the stage well to create steps and moved the actors around the stage, and props used during the show fit well and added to the scenery quite well to create the feel of the location.
My favorite part was the disco scene. Dancing, singing … it was all good and I enjoyed and joined in for every part of it.
“Sister Act” will continue in West Valley City through December 3. To get tickets, call 801-984-9000 or visit hct.org. Running time: 2 hours, 30 minutes with 1 intermission.
If you are visiting Utah, check to see what Hale Centre Theatre is currently playing. It is a great experience and a must-see theater. (For “Big River” a few years ago, real water was part of the show with actors rowing on the water. See, you don’t want to miss it.)
