Brown sugar is not something that I normally have on hand. It used to be that we would go through phases where we have a few bags of brown sugar, we’d use them all around holidays, and then when I’d need it for other times, we wouldn’t have any. Once I realized that you could make homemade brown sugar using sugar and molasses, I have never gone back to buying brown sugar at the store.
Last Thanksgiving, although we had all planned our food out and we had plenty, right before dinner was ready, my sister-in-law decided she really wanted to make pineapple souffle. It’s a tradition for her family that she thought she could go without but then realized she couldn’t. Unfortunately there was no brown sugar in the house and as we weren’t about to leave to see if there were any stores open Thanksgiving afternoon, luckily we remembered a homemade brown sugar recipe and luckily we had both of the ingredients!
By the way, our Thanksgiving was amazing – there are so many good cooks in the family. And the pineapple souffle turned out perfectly with the homemade brown sugar!
My favorite recipe with brown sugar is the absolute best caramel popcorn. It’s perfectly light and crunchy and so addicting. For every batch I make, I end up eating about half of it which is a problem when I’m making it for others. But it’s so delicious. It’s hard not to eat it. The photo below is when I made the caramel popcorn last time. I used my homemade brown sugar and mixed it with butter. Mmm.
How to Make Homemade Brown Sugar
- 1 cup sugar
- 1-2 tablespoons molasses
Mix together sugar and molasses. For light brown sugar, use 1 tablespoon. For dark brown sugar, use 2 tablespoons. Mix until well blended and store or use immediately.
