These hot dog buns only take one hour to make and have a great homemade taste. They use normal bread ingredients which means that when you are short on time, you can make them quickly!
We made these hot dog buns on Memorial Day. We decided to do some grilling for lunch which came really fast after breakfast. I had hardly been able to work in the yard before it was time to start lunch so I whipped up these 1-hour hot dog buns as fast as possible and they were done with plenty of time before the hot dogs were actually ready.
Growing up, I think a lot of pressure was put on holidays being perfect. Fortunately I haven’t carried on that tradition so our holidays are always laid back. In fact, for Memorial Day, we never saw any friends or family (other than randomly running into some friends at the grocery store) because we were working on the house, running errands, and then decided to go get sushi for dinner. It was nice to see other families at the sushi restaurant that evening, not putting pressure on the holiday for the perfect barbecuing experience for dinner.
After our sushi dinner, we headed to a local park and played for a couple of hours. There weren’t many people there so we basically had the park to ourselves. The kids played on the playground, I had a handstand competition with my daughter, and the family played a little 2-on-2 soccer. Because I totally believe bribing works, after the soccer game, we went to a local store for some ice cream cones.
The day was perfect. We may have not planned to see family or friends which is apparently a huge part of Memorial Day, but we loved our day. We spent time together as a family, fixed the sprinklers in our yard, watched a bunch of YouTube videos about strange phenomenons, and had a lovely evening.
- Combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt in mixer.
- Combine oil and water and while mixer is mixing on low, slowly add in liquids.
- Allow mixer to mix on low/medium speed for 5 minutes. If the dough is sticking to the sides, add a little more flour.
- Grease two 9x13 casserole dishes.
- Split the dough into 12 balls.
- Roll out balls to 9 inch hot dog bun shape lengths and place 6 into each dish.
- Cover the casserole dishes with a slightly damp towel and let sit in a warm place for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the oven to 400°F.
- Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes, or until done.
- Once done, place the buns onto a cooling rack to allow to cool.
This recipe creates 9-inch hot dog buns with which we used 10-inch hot dogs. Adjust the size if needed for different hot dog sizes.
This recipe could also be used for a loaf of bread or hamburger buns.
