My family loves to go on family vacations. In fact, my children have been on many vacations in their short lives and if we go more than a few months in between vacations, they get the vacation bug real bad and will even start packing their suitcases even when there’s no planned vacation.
Vacation, in my opinion, is essential to healthy family relationships. Vacations get families out of the ordinary into new situations and although they can be very stressful, they are great for spending a lot of time together as a family with few other obligations weighing on family members. However, there are some key items that are a must for bringing along on vacations that really help children still feel at home while away.
I always recommend bringing the following on a vacation:
- tablet or movie player of some sort
- a few favorite books
- special toys, stuffed animals, blankets
- favorite clothes
- familiar smells
I think no matter which way you travel, there are times when the children are going to be sitting around. Tablets or a way to play movies is a great way to get children’s minds off of the stress of traveling and to help them relax in the situation. For me, going to the airport is one of the things I stress about before I even book the plane tickets. Security, checking luggage, finding terminals, and then keeping the kids entertained while waiting is all very stressful to me so if I’m stressed, I know that it will rub off on the children which is why I always make sure they have a screen that helps them stay focused on something other than my stress. Even if we’re not flying, sitting in the car for hours is not fun either. It’s the only time we watch movies in the car and I love how quickly time passes for them while they are watching movies.
For night time, I like to make sure I keep up the habit of reading to the children some of their favorite books. It keeps the routine the same on vacation as at home and the couple of times I’ve used books that I’ve found in vacation rentals, well, there’s definitely a reason they have been left behind. Favorite toys, stuffed animals, and blankets help with the night time routine, as well as just helping them feel at home. It’s nice to have all of that familiarity at the hotel room or vacation rental when they wake up in the morning or when there is down time.
Favorite clothes is essential to our vacations, oddly enough. While on vacation we are trying so many new things, trying to make them wear new clothes on top of it is not something they are keen on doing. Additionally, it keeps the familiarity of home on vacation because more than likely, they like to wear these favorite clothes a few times a week so why not on vacation as well? Plus the smell of home is on their clothes which is one thing I love about clothes and keeping it feeling like home while away.
The most essential part to vacation is keeping some familiar smells close by. Smell is one of those triggers (more than others) that really makes the brain recall familiar situations quickly. The easiest way to keep our familiar home smell by us at all times is using the same laundry products on our clothes that are going on vacation with us and especially on my son’s blanket that will definitely be going with us. This blanket is one he picked out at birth as his favorite and he cannot go a single day without it. It goes with us out to dinner, to visit friends and family, to attractions on vacation, and it is always in the car with us. We get to enjoy it even at home as it’s under the dinner table, snuggling with us while we read together as a family, cuddling with us while watching a movie, and even sits right outside of the shower while he bathes. I really am not sure what we would do if we accidentally forgot to take it with us on a vacation as it never leaves his side. Luckily that hasn’t happened yet. And luckily we use some of the best smelling laundry products out there to help keep our clothes smelling fresh and to create more snuggle-up moments while we are together.
We use Snuggle® Ultra Blue Sparkle fabric softener and blue iris bliss® Snuggle Scent Boosters® together for each load of laundry. They are better used together (just like families) and have a great long-lasting scent. This blanket of my son’s goes everywhere, all day with him and it still smells good after days of using it without being washed. Our clothes smell so fresh and it is really nice to send my children out to play and when they are done, it is amazing that their clothes still smell good! I feel like using the Snuggle Ultra Blue Sparkle fabric softener and blue iris bliss Snuggle Scent Boosters together to create a Snuggly Softness® and 30 Days of Freshness is one of the best things I can do for my family, especially as we leave on vacation.
You can find Snuggle Ultra Blue Sparkle fabric softener and blue iris bliss Snuggle Scent Boosters at Sam’s Club. I found it at my local Sam’s Club down the detergent aisle on the end and the second product in down the aisle. Once you buy these delightful-smelling products, make sure you follow the directions for use on the packaging exactly and do not over use the products by putting too much product in one load. You can find great savings on these featured Snuggle laundry conditioners in this month’s March Instant Savings Book at Sam’s Club and if you’re reading this any time after this current month, make sure you check your Instant Savings Book for more exclusive savings.
